HTC Droid Incredible Low Memory Fix "Gingerbread"

HTC Droid Incredible Low Memory Fix

HTC Droid Incredible "Low Memory" after initial Droid GingerBread Update 2.3.4 4.06.605.3

HTC Droid Incredible Low on Space issues.

BTW Mine is the Verizon HTC Droid Incredible .... Not the Incredible S / IncredibleS or the new ones.

Big issue going on with the "low on storage" notification coming up when there really is storage space available. I am thinking this was due to the update 4.06.605.3 shown in Settings > About Phone > Software Information.

If you have been promoted by an OTA update (Over The Air) for 4.08.605.2 make sure you do it... This has fixed my Low Memory issues..

If for some reason yours will not complete the update because of low memory you can try these steps to get it done...

****Warning We are not responsible for your phone do these at your own risk this worked for us, but as always YMMV.****

Make Sure you Battery is fully
charged. And you really should be plugged in during any update.

Make sure you have backups of any thing important to you. (ie. Photos, Contacts, messages..... what ever else you can think of)

Boot into recovery by:

Press and hold Power, Choose "Restart" option (If you don't have this just shut down)

When screen turns off, press and hold Volume Down and Power

When the white HBOOT screen appears, use the volume button to move down to
“RECOVERY.”

Press the Power button to select “RECOVERY.”

When the triangle and exclamation appears, hold the Volume Up and Power button at
the same time.

Using the volume button, scroll down to “Wipe cache partition” and select it.
Select "Reboot system now"

Then try the update there are instructions below to force the OTA update.

Force phone to check for update.

Manually change the date on your phone one month in advance. So if its November change it to December. This will trigger an automatic check in with the update servers and you will get the appropriate update.

Go To Menu > Settings > Date and Time

Un-check Automatic to prevent the date and time from automatically updating

Change the date to one month from today (under Set Date)

Go back to the main settings and select About Phone > Check For Update the first time you do this it will say your phone is up to date.. That is expected arrow back to about phone then > System Updates again and it should start the OTA download for 4.08.605.2 follow the prompts for the update.

If for some reason your phone still refuses to update due to low memory issues or prompts... You may have to remove so app's in order to force the update.

If that is the case remove some of the apps and start from the top with the Wipe cache partition.. It is tedious and I my self had to do this 3 times to get it to work.. But it is worth it unless you want to ROOT your HTC Incredible and use a custom ROM...

Thanks so much! I was getting ready to chuck my phone against the wall.

Actually, it appears this does not fix the problem. My wife and I each have an Incredible. Both are running 4.08.605.2. I was hoping this s/w update would fix the low memory issue. For my phone, I thought it had. I loaded up lots of apps in phone memory and it worked o.k.

However, my wife had a friend who e-mailed and texted her several videos and the low on space warning came back. Mail was over 50M when I checked.

Once I cleared the data on the stock HTC mail app, the warning went away. Of course, afterwards I had to set her account back up.

I was really hoping it was completely fixed this time...

This is great! thank you. I'm so sick of this low memory issue. My phone kept trying to update but it wouldn't let me because of the low memory. I was able to download the update OTA manually by following your instructions. thank you!

This was awesome, helped me get my phone updated to Gingerbread. But then the low space error kept coming back.

This is how I fixed my phone... I disclaim any and all responsibility for anyone following these instructions!!!

I *FINALLY* found the culprit in my Verizon HTC Droid Incredible phone with Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread.

It used to be, that Facebook or the Contacts Directory, or sometimes Mail were the programs taking up space.

But it turns out on my phone at least, I found there is an error log that keeps growing, and it's gotten worse after the Gingerbread update.

To deal with this, you have to root your phone. I've had this phone since it came out, and I've never needed to root until now...

Instructions are at http://androidforums.com/incredible-all-things-root/427344-2-3-4-root-downgrade-s-off.html

NOTE: You do NOT have to downgrade and you don't need "S-off", you only need to follow the directions up to where it says "you should now have the superuser app in your app drawer." Be sure to read the special note to users with the SLCD screen.

Go get "Root Explorer" from Market, then navigate to the following directory:

/data/data/com.android.htcprofile

And there is a file called anr_history.txt

For me, it seems to grow by more than 300K per day with unneeded crash log data. Mine was 70+ MB!!!

Delete the file, it's not needed for anything.

This site: http://atlas.hasselbalch.com/android/anr-using-my-space gives instructions on how to prevent it from regenerating... when you reboot your phone, the file is re-created. You have to remove write permissions and then change the ownership of the file so that it will not grow again. This can be accomplished with Root Explorer.

Good luck.

I have been living with this issue for months and just never took the time to really dig in and search for the fix. These directions are spot on. I had to try them 3 times in a row before I started getting the Low Space error again. I went ahead and cleared the Facebook cache (about 22mb) in Settings>Applications to free up even more space and tried again and THEN it finally installed. How sweet it is.

This worked after two attempts. Thank you! I had previously deleted a lot of stuff in an effort to free up some space. Curious to see what happens when I begin using phone as a smart phone again.
