Consumers File Official Complaint agains Hewlett-Packard Co.

"Chinese consumers have files an official complaint against Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) over faulty laptop computers."

Reuters

Well is this not fitting ... seeing that this blog has been working on the DV series for months now.

Reuters continues to report on the 10th of March 2010 that:

"Jiang Suhua, a lawyer at Yingke Law Firm in
Beijing, told Reuters the complaint centered on video cards which overheated and caused the laptop to malfunction.

He said that around 170 Chinese sent the complaint on Friday to the country's quality control watchdog agency, General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

Jiang said the problems dated back as far as 2007 in some cases.

When contacted by Reuters, HP said in a statement it had a program in November 2007 to offer a free repair for customers with affected HP notebooks. It declined to comment directly on the complaint.

Jiang said the group wanted the government to investigate and order HP to recall all faulty laptops in China.

"Yes, we can bring it to court, but right now it has not reached that stage," he said.

HP generates more than three-fifths of its revenue outside its U.S. home base. Last month, it said sales from fast-growing emerging countries Brazil, Russia, India and China leapt 41 percent from a year ago.

Spoof or Truth New Egg Shipping Fake i7 Proceesors

"Intel acknowledged Monday that at least one counterfeit version of its Core i7-920 processor made its may into the U.S. market, and said it's trying to determine how many more are out there."

PCWorld Sumner Lemon, IDG News Service

This would really tick me off if I ordered say the Core i7-870 off of New Egg for aroung 569.99 and opend the box and got
what Hardpoc is reporting to be a Demo Box. Or even as they are reporting the Intel Core i7-920 at a retail price of 288.99.

From Hardocp's web site from New Eggs Public Relations here is the responce:
"Newegg is aware of a shipping error that occurred with certain recent orders of the Intel Core i7-920 CPU. After investigating the issue internally it appears one of our long term partners mistakenly shipped a small number of demo boxes instead of functional units. Our customer service team has already begun proactively reaching out to the affected customers. In line with our commitment to ensure total customer satisfaction, we are doing everything in our power to resolve the issue as soon as possible and with the least amount of inconvenience to our customers."

CE's GeekBook Mid-Life Crisis (Need to Do Something!)

DV2000 What's behind the LCD

HP Pavilion DV2000 behind the LCD

This post is in response to an email I received from JT his question was:

The right hand-side wi-fi cable was suddenly chopped off. Actually, looking at one end, it looked like it was sliced off. My question is...where does it go? into the LCD panel like the left wi-fi cable? Is this fixable or am I going to be permanently relegated to an external wireless adapter?

Well to answer JT's question here
a shot of the inside of the top case where the HP dv2000 lcd lives.

As you can see the LCD panel has been removed already and I have traced where the Wi-Fi cables for the DV2000 internal wi-fi card run up each side of the panel. They should be replaceable.. and or you could try and splice the cable back together and tape it with electrical tape just make sure you have enough length to route it back to the bottom of the case where the card lives.

In this one I have circled the Microphones for the DV2000 at the top and the Web Cam location.

Down at the bottom you can see where the HP DV2000 LCD inverter lives in the case.

Don't Press the F1 Key Devastation Could Ensue

Don't Press the F1 Key Devastation Could Ensue

Microsoft put out a Security Advisory (981169) yesterday can be read here

The whole advisory reads like the instructions that came with your most recent electronic gadget from China.

But what is really happening
is there is a vulnerability in VBScript (definition below) that can be exploited. Apparently the attack would display a dialog box that requires you to hit the f1 key to complete the attack.

It could come in the form of an email, email attachment, or a web page.

So what can it do? or what can they (attackers) do?

"An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as a logged-on user"

So how do I fix it? Don't touch it call your local Geek!!!...

Naw just kidding:

log off and log back in windows will close the affected explorer.
Or
Use Task Manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL) and end the exporer in Applications
if its nasty
Use Task Manager and go to the Processes tab and end all iexplore.exe ***don't end exporer.exe you may have to end up rebooting then***

Or call your local geek and tell them you have a PEBCAK issue.

Good Luck

Wikipedia VBScript: (short for Visual Basic Scripting Edition) is an Active Scripting language, developed by Microsoft, which uses the Component Object Model to access elements of the environment within which it is running (e.g. FileSystemObject or FSO used to create, read, update and delete files). The language's syntax reflects its origins as a limited variation of Microsoft's Visual Basic programming language.

VBScript has been installed by default in every desktop release of Microsoft Windows since Windows 98[1]; as part of Windows Server since Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack[2]; and optionally with Windows CE (depending on the device it is installed on).

IPad launch Delay (Still think It should be sold in the Feminine hygiene isle at the local supermarket!)

IPad Launch Dealyed??

I'm not even sure why I am writing on this product at this point but for some reason I am drawn to Apple Products.. Don't get me wrong I'm and PC too.. Must be one of those Hybrid type people. Or maybe (OMG) bi- go both ways PC and MAC???? Yikes...

well either way Reuters posted this morning that
"according to Canaccord Adams analyst Peter Misek.

He said the iPad launch, currently expected in late March, may be “somewhat limited” by an unspecified “manufacturing bottleneck” at the device’s manufacturer, Hon Hai Precision. That could make the launch a U.S.-only event and limit available units to 300,000 in March–which might even prompt Apple to delay the debut until April, Misek said."

They did not elaborate on the bottleneck but I'm sure it has someone’s dander up.

As for me I'm still not sure why I am drawn to this .. As I have not want or desire to have one other than just another nifty gadget to carry around in my other wise cluttered life. Oh .. and will not be able to afford it anyhow.. so there you go ...

Will you get an iPad??
