Pavilion HP Laptop Fix / Issues DIY

Pavilion HP Laptop

Fix / Issues DIY

This site has been outlining some of the steps to fix the HP Pavilion Laptops specifically the following series of HP Notebooks:

HP Pavilion DV6000
HP Pavilion DV2000
HP Pavilion DV9000
HP Pavilion TX1000

But this morning I woke up and received another comment on the DV6000 Penny Fix post and I though it was very important to share with you as a separate post due to the fact that the DV6000 Penny Fix page has received over 90 comments and you may not get to the bottom of it.

Thank you very much Braden: the comment is as follows word for word.

"I used to work at a reflow shop, and was one of seven guys (out of twenty) who worked on nothing but HP's, we had so many. A couple things to note.

1.) If your laptop is powering off within a second or so of being turned on, it is also the Northbridge (or possibly the processor, but probably not).

2.) If you're getting bad video issues that aren't caused by the LCD or LCd cable (ie white screen, split-screen, or garbage) it is the GPU, if your laptop has a GPU, which is the chip to left of the northbridge. If you don't have a GPU, it's the bloody northbridge.

3.) If your USB ports, webcam, sound, ethernet, etc don't work, it's the southbridge, which is under the wifi card. This is a lot rarer, and you'll more than likely kill the board the rest of the way by using these methods to fix, so I would really recommend sending it out or dealing with a partially functioning laptop.

4.)If one of your RAM slots has failed, if it is an AMD board it is the processor, if it is an Intel board it is the northbridge. It is almost never the slots themselves, at least on any HP I've ever worked on. I've heard different about some of the other brands.

5.) Stick the board in a low-temp oven for at least four hours before reflow. That wont fix it, but it will bake the moisture out of the board so it wont warp when you apply heat from the heatgun. If your board warps, it's toast, the layers of the PCB will short everything in the area of the warp, and there's nothing you can do about it.

6.) These boards can take a surprising beating. If you really don't want to spend the money, keep trying until the board is black. Even if it gets browned around the edges it's still probably fine. Just be sure you don't dislocate any of those fifty-billion tiny capacitors.

7.) No power issues are also sometimes caused by the southbridge or the Super-IO (don't reflow the super-IO, replace it, and good luck, it's a bitch.) More often, however, it's a cap or a transistor on the V+ line. If you know what you're doing, it's a super-easy fix, but be sure and replace the transistor with a diode. HP used transistors instead because they're cheaper, but they suck and fail, and a diode is what you need.

Good luck! In principle, this method works similar to a reflow machine, but is way cheaper. Just be careful to keep the temperature as even as possible on both the top and the bottom of the board.

Any questions, email siekomonki at gmail.

HP DV2000, DV6000, DV9000 GPU Temperature

HP DV2000, DV6000, DV9000 GPU Temperature

After the posts on the HP DV series tear downs / Disassemble, self fixes, or diy.

I have been asked what the max temperature of the Nvidia GPU chip in my HP Pavilion DV6000.

Well from feed back
from a few folks that have performed the BGA Re-flow and utilized the DV6000 Penny fix here are the temps you should stay with in

Good temps to have would be between

40C and 60C This is after using the DV6000 penny fix

Before the temps were ranging in the

65C to 80C whew cook an egg on that one.

My DV2500 that I use almost daily (and has not been through the penny fix yet)

Hovers around 68C which is too hot in my book .. I will be at least tearing the DV2500 down here soon to apply Artic Silver and the penny fix.

Hope this helps.

NetBook Screen Resolution 1024x768 or Higer with out Scrolling

NetBook Screen Resolution of 1024X768 or Higher The Squeeze

HP Mini 110

Netbook fake resolution

NRC Download Direct link has been added to this post ... I know it was difficult to find before so I have it on my server ... Shhhh don't tell anyone ok ;)

So from the previous post you learned how to change Windows XP native on the NetBook to produce 1024x768 resolutions but you had to scroll around the screen to utilize the new resolution.

For an easy way to do this on Windows 7 follow me here

This resolution setting of 1024 by 768 or higer should work on any NetBook with the following video chipset:
-Intel G35, G33, G31, G965, GM965, 945G/GM, 915G/GM chipsets with GMA driver 14.25.50 or later.

Asus Eee Pc 1024X768 *Tested and works
Aspire One 1024X768 *Tested and works
Dell Inspiron Mini 1024X768
IBM Lenovo Netbook 1024X768
MSI Wind or U series 1024X768
Samsung 1024X768
Toshiba Mini 1024X768
HP Mini 1000 1100 1024X768 *Tested and works.

If you have a NetBook with the Nvidia Ion chipset I am not sure this will help you. But if I get one that has the Ion chip set I will definitely test it out and or find a resolution for it.

****READ through the whole post before trying this ******

This post will show you how to change the resolution with out scrolling or panning on the HP Mini 1000 series NetBook and I'm sure other brands of NetBook. Producing a very usable 1024X768 resolution on your NetBook just a bit squoozen (lol is that a word???)

Here we go...

What you need is .... The NetBook

And a program called NRC "Netbook Resolution Customizer Beta2 at the time of writing" This can be downloaded from the link above. It is also under the name of AsTray Plus??

Or I have a direct Link here on my server for NRC 1.0 Beta 2 for you...

Download the program and extract it to where ever you want it to run from your HP Mini. I chose my desktop.

On the first run it will take you to the Settings for NRC program. I placed my default resolution in there for the HP Mini 1000 series NetBook the native resolution is 1024x576 at 60 Hertz.

This will set up the NRC config file. Which is also editable using notepad if you know what you are doing.

I set mine not to start with Windows due to the fact that I have not been able to get all of the functions of the program to work perfectly just yet.

Here are the Modeline's I used for the HP Mini 1154NR yours may differ or you can try these.

Modeline 1 for standard resolution for the HP Mini 1000
"1024X576_60.00" 47.00 1024 1064 1168 1312 567 577 580 597 -HSync +Vsync

Modeline 2 for 1024X768 resolution on the NetBook
"1024X768_60.00" 64.11 1024 1080 1184 1344 768 769 772 795 -Hsync +Vsync

Here are the settings for the Quick Switch I set up but they only work from going from standard to Large for some reason I can't get back to the standard 1024X576 resolution of the HP Mini 1154NR / 1151NR.

After your settings are saved in NRC Beta2 it will minimize down to your tray
click on the Quick Switch ... Large and Voila you should now have a Squished 1024X768 on your NetBook with no Panning or Scrolling...

If you want here is the NRC config file I use just click on the link and save as

*** The only way I have found to get back to native resolution at this time is to reboot the NetBook like I said I have not been able to work through all of the kinks of the program yet ... and it may just be that the program is a Beta not final release yet ****

Stay tuned for the Video

1024x768 Resolution On NetBook

1024x768 resolution on HP Mini 1000 series NetBook Windows XP

So you want a higher resolution on your NetBook that may only be able to show 1024X600 or the HP Mini 1000 series Netbook standard 1024X576.

There is another article to follow up on this one to make 1024X768 fit on the screen.

For an easy way to do this on Windows 7 follow me here

Follow along with me

Right Click on the Desktop of the Netbook and click on Properties.

Click on the Settings Tab for to show the resolutions that the NetBook is capeable of. You can use the slider all you want with the default settings and nothing will happen.

Click on the advanced Button in the lower right hand side of the NetBook's Display Properties and you will be taken to the screen shot above.

Click on the Monitor Tab of the NetBook You will see where the check box Hide Modes that this monitor cannot display

Un-check the box and click Apply.

Click on the Adapter tab on the Mini 1000 and click on List All Modes.

You will be presented with a List of all the resolutions you can pick from for your new Resolution on the NetBook.

I chose 1024X768 True Color (32 bit), 60 Hertz and click OK.

That will bring you back to the NetBook Monitor Adapter tab and click Apply

You now have a higher Resolution on your HP Mini 1000 or other netbook of 1024X768 or better.

The only problme with this is now the screen on the NetBook does what is called Panning your resolution will not fit on the native capeablilites of the NetBook so as you move your mouse around so will the screen.

Check the next post to see how to do get a 1024x786 resolution on the HP Mini with out Panning.
